onX Trip Planning
Project Brief
Planning and managing trips with motorized off-road and snow-sport groups is tedious for many onX users. Coordinating multi-day trips, especially with non-onX members, often involves using multiple tools like onX, All Trails, Google Sheets/Excel, Google Maps, and messaging apps.
Folder Sharing in onX Offroad addresses the issue of sharing content post decision making, but doesn’t fully cover the planning and communication process. Enhancing trip planning within onX will boost adoption of content sharing, making collaboration easier and reducing reliance on external tools as well as increase conversions from non-onX users participating in group trips. The collaboration of the feature could also be the first steps towards a more social aspect to onX with public trips and trail shares.
Expected Results:
- Increase in content sharing adoption
- Increase in onX app usage time
- Increase in conversion rates from perspective users participating in group trips
- Increase feature advantage over competitors
Responsibilities
- User Research
- User Interviews
- Product Research
- Competitor Research
- UX/UI Design
Target Market
This feature would target users who participate in group trips. Focusing on this user base allows us to leverage group dynamics and peer influence positively to reach and convert potential customers who currently use other solutions for creating and managing group off-roading excursions.
Identified Market Problems
- Planning a group trip with multiple routes or days requires a tedious amount of effort
- Organizing all the details for a group trip with others requires multiple solutions.
- Details get lost during collaboration due to multiple text groups or solutions
- Due to the need for alternate solutions, onX users struggle to convince others to onboard
User feedback revealed a strong demand for a feature enabling the creation and management of group off-roading trips directly within the onX Offroad app. To address this, the current user decision-making process was mapped based on insights from interviews. This feedback informed the development of an impact-effort matrix, which helped identify effective and iterative solutions. A user journey was then created, along with low-fidelity mockups.
The central feature is a collaborative itinerary tool that allows users to add waypoints, areas, routes, and trails to a shared itinerary. Users can also include dates and times for meetings, departures, and returns. Others can be invited to add content and collaborate in creating the itinerary.
The feature facilitates collaboration by enabling users to invite others to contribute to, discuss, and join trips. Participants can select specific parts of the itinerary they wish to join. Additionally, the feature supports the potential for sharing of trips with the onX Offroad community, allowing users to join public trips created by others, such as the Moab Jeep Safari.
